ESPNChicago.comChicago Bears coach Lovie Smith said Monday that Matt Forte does not have a high ankle sprain, and while he didn't go into specifics, he did say Forte is still sore, which is why the Bears brought back Kahlil Bell.
Forte was injured during Thursday's 23-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and multiple outlets reported it was a high ankle sprain, which usually keeps a player sidelined longer than a normal sprain.
"Matt did go down with an ankle injury. It's not a high ankle sprain, as has been reported," Smith said on WBBM (780-AM). "But right now, you know when you don't finish the game and he still has some soreness, we'll continue to monitor it, but we felt we needed another running back here, that's why we brought back a guy who knows our system and has played good ball for us in Kahlil Bell."
The Bears released Bell in the preseason after he reportedly refused to take a pay cut. They signed him to a one-year contract on Saturday.
Smith refused to discuss a sideline confrontation from Thursday game when Jay Cutler screamed at offensive tackle J'Marcus Webb and bumped into him. Webb later brushed off the incident as insignificant, and Cutler explained his demeanor by saying he cares about winning.
"We've moved on from the last game," Smith said. "We didn't play as well as we needed to. We didn't handle some situations as we needed to. We like our football team. Things happen inside that you would like they weren't portrayed in the public, but that happens sometimes and you move on.
"We don't have any major issues except we lost the football game, and can't wait for the team to get back on the field this week."
The Bears host the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, and it will be interesting to see how the crowd reacts when the Bears have the ball inside the red zone. Cutler was visibly upset with the fans for yelling while he was trying to call plays during the season-opening win over the Indianapolis Colts. Cutler later asked the fans to tone it down when the offense has the ball.
"We want first off to give the crowd a lot of things to cheer for to get them into the football game, but it's pretty simple what we're asking, and our crowd knows that," Smith said. "When our offense is out there we would like for them to be as quiet as possible. And when the defense is out there we want them to scream and yell as much as they possibly can.
"But again, our crowd is great, they know that, and we'll all be ready to go this week."
